Hiro's your typical smart ass kid growing up with a sarcastic and cynical nature. He's got a sharp answer for everything and will never back down from a verbal fight until he wins. We first meet Hiro when he's picking on Tohru, such an easy target to pick on. He throws his shoe in front of her, demands that she give it back to him instead of stand there looking so clueless, and then runs off with her mother's picture that she always keeps with her. Of course, this picture is precious to Tohru and she's terribly confused. Hiro's running mouth was just too quick and sharp for Tohru to get a single word in or understand exactly what was going on before he ran off. Truly, Hiro has a grudge against our dear Tohru. And whatever could our dear Tohru have done to Hiro for him to cultivate such a grudge? The girl isn't capable of hurting a fly. In fact, Hiro's grudge stems from something completely out of Tohru's control, it's a core foundation of her personality: she loves and understands just about everyone while nearly everyone else is fond of her in return. She's very warm and naturally attracts people. One of those people happens to be Kisa, Hiro's crush. Tohru adores Kisa. She has a habit of randomly turning around and hugging the younger girl, screaming, "Cuuuute! XD" while hearts fly around. Kisa is also greatly fond of Tohru in return and cherishes the attention. Ever since the two became close and found themselves in an older-younger sister relationship, Kisa has been spending all her time at Shigure's house, helping Tohru with the chores, watching her favorite anime with Tohru, going out to the park with Tohru, etcetera. Hiro, meanwhile, is steaming with jealousy. Kisa's supposed to be watching her favorite anime with him, he's supposed to be buying her the ice cream, not Tohru. He's the one that's supposed to comfort her. But things aren't so easy. Hiro could simply ask Kisa to go to the park with him, or tell her his feelings outright, but that's outrageous. To a boy Hiro's age with his kind of nature, being so blunt and clear about his feelings is taboo. Most of the time Hiro ends up saying exactly the opposite of what he wants to say. Kisa asks him if she could borrow an anime tape from him. He says, "Oh that anime? I don't like it anyway, you can keep it." What he's really saying is, "Don't just borrow it, keep it since you like it so much. Furthermore, invite me to watch it with you, please." But Kisa, being at such an age where she wouldn't figure out boy feelings unless they're explained to her, is completely clueless of why Hiro's been acting so cold to her. He doesn't know how to show his feelings, she doesn't know how to receive them. Ah, the mixed up hearts of adolescent children. What a dilemma. Oh ho ho. The main reason Hiro hides his emotions doesn't completely have to do
with his stubborn personality, but is also partly Akito's fault (because
Akito just messes up so many things). Hiro told Akito of his feelings
for Kisa way back when, before she went through troubled times, and
because Akito didn't approve, he hit Kisa in front of Hiro and acted
brutally towards her. Akito is never too pleased when any of the
Juunishi have romantic interests, you see. So in order to protect Kisa
from Akito's harsh temper, Hiro distanced himself away from her. And it
just so Eventually, Hiro begins to soften. Kisa is over with Tohru all the time, so Hiro also starts spending more time with Tohru and company at Shigure's house; Tohru makes sure to invite him. He becomes used to their presence more, and it's especially evident much later in the manga that Hiro has become friends with Tohru, so much that he shows concern for her. Of course, "showing concern," in Hiro terms certainly doesn't mean what it would mean for normal people, but he notices when Tohru's sad or homesick for her mother, and vaguely points it out. Hiro's embarrassed with showing his emotions. He's yet to grow up and he knows it; he was the first to declare that he was still a child and had a lot to learn. His way of showing concern for others is abrupt and aloof, but he always means well. But wherever Hiro goes, trouble follows. This kid's definitely got a dangerous mind and simply can't hold his tongue. Stubborn, cynical, sarcastic, egotistic (especially with first impressions), and sharp-witted, he is always looking for verbal fights. He gets Kyou riled up the best, though the verbal fights turn more to the physical side when Kyou threatens to pound his face in. :P But Hiro pays no mind to Kyou's threats and keeps firing off his condescending and riddling remarks. Most of the time he makes absolutely no sense and just twists concepts around to make himself come out on top, even if he's the one mistaken -- it's like being bombarded constantly with word-nukes when his mouth starts to run. He really gets on a roll. Watching him in the anime, I like Hiro. He's a good guy, just has a hard time showing it, but when he does, he's a darling. However, if I were brought face to face with him, I would probably go off like a firebomb (i.e.: Kyou fashion). I simply wouldn't be able to stand the kid's blabbering mouth filled with twists and turns, and I'd probably end up so frustrated I'd strangle him or something to that extent. Hiro requires a lot of patience, the kind that Tohru is ready to grant. It's because Tohru is patient and understanding enough to not take the Kyou way (of frustrated violence :P), but the Tohru way of listening and healing, that she helps Hiro grow and open up.
