Often called a Yankee (meaning someone who isn't attractive) by her arch-enemy Kyou, Uotani Arisa, addressed as Uo-chan by Tohru, is not your typical girl. She was once a part of a gang but is now one of Tohru's two best friends, always looking out for her. Tohru first met Arisa when she was going through troubled times. In the manga there is a bit more detail, but we know that in the anime when one night she took action to leave the gang that she had been a part of, she was being beaten by the rest of the girls and probably she would've been hurt either really badly or to the point of near death -- gangs don't tend to go easy on members gone sour. It was then that Tohru's mother, knowing of Arisa's situation because of her former position as a gang leader herself, barged in on the whole ordeal and saved Arisa, bringing her home to Tohru. The two helped her recuperate and start over a less stressful life; since then Arisa has been undyingly loyal to Tohru, always watching out for her, being there for her. Especially when Tohru's mother died, Arisa felt her pain to a certain extent, having been so close to the mother-daughter pair. Arisa's first true friend was Tohru, and to a certain extent this is also true for Tohru in return. Until Arisa comes around, there is no hint of Tohru having been close friends with any other kids her age. Though Tohru makes herself out to be a very amiable person, she's rather hard to get to know personally. She's polite and kind to everyone, but at the same time she holds herself back from becoming real close friends with anyone easily. Tohru, a tiny, normal, somewhat shy and quiet girl, was the one who saved Arisa, the tall, stubborn, tough girl. Arisa was even taken aback by Tohru's tact and strength at dealing with her situation -- as well as the support that radiated from both Tohru and her mother. Both of them were so open, so friendly and so warm, Arisa had found a family she had never had in them. When Arisa first met Tohru's mother Kyoko, she was shocked with the image of a doting mother that she gave off, instead of manly and tough, like what Arisa naturally expected the former leader of the Red Butterfly gang to be like. Though she was at first disgusted with her shock, she later came to love Kyoko like her own mother. Still to this day, Arisa continues to admire Kyoko. On the anniversary of her death, Arisa wears the Red Butterfly uniform that she inherited from her.
Though some people address Arisa as being a Yankee, a condescending term used for people who aren't attractive, she isn't ugly. She's actually very beautiful when she wishes to be, especially in the manga. Her hair style is different in the way she's tall and a tough girl play into the name people have labeled her with. However, Kyou is mainly the one who calls her a Yankee, simply because the two are always fighting to begin with and Arisa certainly has her share of insults for the orange-headed, cat-tempered boy. One of her favorite hobbies is pushing Kyou around just to get a rise out of him, which she always manages to do. The two are quite an explosive pair. Every single card game played turns into a bet or some sort of challenge between the two and Arisa always cracks the whip on Kyou, like when she was over at Shigure's house for New Years' cleaning and Arisa beat him up and yelled at him to stop messing up. The girl can't help it; Kyou's fun to rile up. Arisa might come off as being intimidating or hard to get to know, but when it comes down to it, she just likes to be happy and have a good time. When not fighting with Kyou or chasing away treacherous Yuki fan club members, she's always smiling or cracking jokes. She's somewhat like a lone wolf. When she gets attached to someone, for example friends like Tohru and Hana, she's loyal to the last.
